I have just returned from a trip to visit family in Europe. I was horrified to discover that 40% of birds have dissapeared from Austria and that Europe is losing 5,2% of its insects per year. Do we understand what a disaster this is???? This is the canary in the cage!!! The main culprit: monoculture farming. This firstly has decimated habitat including the hedgerows that once shielded Europe from the brunt of ecosystem collapse. Secondly the stupendous practice of unleashing an arsonal of poisons onto the monoculture to protect it from the swarm of pests that now attack it. Thirdly the disastrous practice of pushing up yields by spreading copious amounts of chemical fertilizers onto the soil that is home to a massive and delicate microscopic world of life. These fertilizers replace organic matter which is the base of all life from the soil upwards. These fertilizers kill soil life and obliterate the base of the food chain. How far are we going to push this????
There are so many people, professional and not, gardening and farming in ways that promote and protect biodiversity. It is time to give them center stage. It is possible. We need to do it now!!! Support only those that are working toward biodiversity and life. Make that your culture. This is the most important decision you could make for the environment and life at large. And you will be far more healthy for it.
